ABCDE Melanoma Guide
Know the warning signs of melanoma — early detection saves lives
Asymmetry
One half of the mole does not match the other half in shape, color, or thickness.
Border Irregularity
The edges are ragged, notched, blurred, or irregular rather than smooth and even.
Color Variation
The mole has multiple colors or an uneven distribution of color (brown, black, tan, red, white, blue).
Diameter >6mm
The mole is larger than 6mm across (about the size of a pencil eraser), although melanomas can be smaller.
Evolving
The mole is changing in size, shape, color, elevation, or any new symptom like bleeding, itching, or crusting.
Common Skin Conditions
Acne
Common condition where hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells.
Eczema
Chronic condition causing inflamed, itchy, cracked, and rough skin.
Psoriasis
Autoimmune disease causing rapid skin cell buildup forming scales and red patches.
Rosacea
Chronic skin condition causing facial redness and sometimes small, pus-filled bumps.
Hives (Urticaria)
Raised, itchy welts that appear suddenly, often as an allergic reaction.
Ringworm
Fungal infection causing a circular, ring-shaped rash (not caused by a worm).
Warts
Small, grainy skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).
Melanoma Warning Signs
The most serious type of skin cancer, developing in melanocytes (pigment-producing cells).
Contact Dermatitis
Skin inflammation caused by contact with allergens or irritants.
Seborrheic Dermatitis
Common condition causing scaly patches, red skin, and stubborn dandruff.
Keratosis Pilaris
Harmless condition causing small, rough bumps on the skin, often called 'chicken skin'.
Vitiligo
Condition causing loss of skin color in patches due to melanocyte destruction.
Daily Skin Care Tips
Daily SPF 30+ Sunscreen
Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, even on cloudy days. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors.
Moisturize Daily
Use a fragrance-free moisturizer right after bathing to lock in hydration and strengthen the skin barrier.
Gentle Cleanser
Use a mild, pH-balanced cleanser. Avoid harsh soaps that strip natural oils and damage the skin barrier.
Annual Skin Check
Schedule a yearly full-body skin exam with a dermatologist. Perform monthly self-exams at home.
